Horoscopes: A Biblical Perspective

Horoscopes: A Biblical Perspective

The ancient Egyptians worshipped Horus, who they believed was the god of the sky and kingship. Horus was believed to be the son of Osiris and Isis, and his eye was a symbol of protection and healing. However, over time, the name Horus became associated with astrology and the zodiac, giving rise to the term horoscope. In this article, I will explore the origins of Horus and how it became associated with horoscopes, as well as what the Bible has to say about astrology.

Who Was Horus in Horoscopes?

Horus was one of the most important gods in ancient Egypt, and his worship dates back to the pre-dynastic period. He was often depicted as a falcon or a man with a falcon head, and he was associated with the sun and the sky. Horus was also believed to be the protector of the pharaohs, and his eye was a symbol of protection and healing. The eye of Horus was often used in amulets and talismans, and it was believed to have magical powers.

Astrology and the Zodiac

Over time, the name Horus became associated with astrology and the zodiac. The zodiac is a circle of twelve constellations that are used in astrology to predict the future. Each constellation is associated with a different sign of the zodiac, and each sign is believed to have certain personality traits and characteristics. The term horoscope comes from the Greek word horoskopos, which means “observer of the hour.” Horoscopes are based on the position of the sun, moon, and planets at the time of a person’s birth, and they are used to predict the future and provide guidance.

What the Bible Says About astrology and the Zodiac

However, the Bible has a different perspective on astrology and the zodiac. In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, it says, “There shall not be found among you anyone who… practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord.” The Bible clearly condemns the practice of astrology and other forms of divination, and it warns against seeking guidance from anything other than God.

Conclusion

In Matthew 28:18, Jesus says, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Note that he says all authority. Believing in the power and authority of astrology goes directly against biblical wisdom and Scripture clearly states that chasing after false gods is a sin (Matthew 24:24, 1 Corinthians 8:6, Exodus 20:3). There is no biblical evidence that God has given authority to the stars or astrologists.
